Belmont University is a private, co-educational, liberal art university located in Nashville, which is the capital of the US state of Tennessee, as well as the county seat of Davidson County. Belmont University traces its roots back in 1890, when the Belmont College was opened, first starting as an educational institution which offered elementary school through junior college education, to young ladies. The college was merged with Ward Seminary and the renowned Ward-Belmont School for Women was established, in 1913. Belmont University was officially opened in 1991, due to the continuous growing of the institution, and since then, the university has blossomed in both quality and size.
Today, Belmont University is the largest Christian university in the state, as well as the 2nd largest private university in Tennessee, after Vanderbilt University, offering its students bachelor's degrees in more than 75 academic majors, through 6 colleges and one school, as well as 20 master's degrees and 3 doctoral programs. According to an article in the U.S. News & World Report, Belmont occupies the 7th place among masters-degrees universities, in the South, and has also been cited as a `School to Watch`, in 2009, for its innovative educational programs.
The athletic teams from Belmont University are known as the Belmont Bruins, who compete in the NCAA Division I, the university being also a member of the Atlantic Sun Conference, which is a non-football conference, being best known for their achievements in men's basketball. In 2007, the university has won the Atlantic Sun Conference championship, for the second year in a row, defeating East Tennessee State University. In the second year, the Bruins advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 3rd straight year, showing their best tournament game, against the Duke Blue Devils, falling short by a score of 71-70.
